Zara qualifies for 2011 Nationals in 3 events

Zara Ryan will make her third trip in three years to Sheffield in July as she has already qualified for three events in the 2011 Nationals.

Zara is currently twelve, but will celebrate her birthday as the National Championships begin, which means she has to qualify as a thirteen year old - an even tougher task ! Unfazed by this, however, she was recently the only Newbury swimmer to compete at the Crawley Spring Open, winning the 12/13 year old age group 400m Individual Medley in a time of 5.18.05secs, 0.68 seconds inside the national qualifying time (NQT) for 13 year olds.

Following this physically and mentally exhausting event, Zara swam the 200m IM in 2.31.09secs, winning her age group, but just 0.16 seconds outside the time required for Sheffield.

Zara then put in two storming performances in the 100m and 200m Fly, coming home second in both in 1.08.60secs and 2.30.08secs respectively, but crucially inside the NQT in both events by 0.10s in the 100m and 0.91s in the 200m.

Zara finished off the weekend with a new long course PB in the 200m Freestyle in a time of 2.16.34secs to finish in third position.

Loulou qualifies for National Swim finals in Sheffield

Two of Newbury's A' Squad swimmers, Louise McFadzen & Jake Jezzard, spent the bank holiday weekend competing in several events at the 2011 ASA South Eastern Region Youth Championships.

First up and seeded 5th in her heat in the 50m backstroke, Louise McFadzen got off to an excellent start by winning the heat in a time of 33.04 seconds, despite being one of the younger competitors in the girls 14 & 15 year old age group. Her time was good enough to be the reserve for the final, giving an overall placing of ninth.

The Saturday afternoon session saw Jake Jezzard take to the blocks in the 100m backstroke, going out very hard in the first 50m for 30.88 secs at the split, with a finishing time of 1.05.50 seconds, 16th place overall, again competing as one of the younger swimmers in the 15/16 age group.

In the same event for the girls, Louise Mcfadzen was again seeded 5th, needing a 1.08.85 second finish to qualify for the National Finals in Sheffield in July. With a solid 33.61 second at the 50m split she not only won the heat, but also qualified for the national finals in a fantastic 1.08.24 seconds.

This was also good enough to qualify her for the final later in the day, coming home in 5th in a slightly slower 1.09.15 secs.

Both swimmers went on to compete in the 400m freestyle and 200m backstroke, with Jake finishing in a time of 4.38.02s in the 15/16 year old boys 400m free and Louise in 4.47.59secs in the 14/15 years for girls.

Day 2 on Sunday and both swimmers returned for the 200m backstroke, with Louise up first for the girls, qualifying in 4th for the final in a time of 2.29.17 seconds and Jake securing a 2.23.54 seconds finishing 19th overall. With an almost identical time of 2.29.11sec in the final, Loulou finished in a commendable fourth place, missing out on the bronze by an agonising 0.02 of a second.

Sunday afternoon's session saw both swimmers compete in the 50m Butterfly, with Louise scoring a big PB in her heat of 30.98 seconds, qualifying for the evening's final, finishing in a dead heat for fourth place in 31.14 seconds. Jake also produced an excellent swim in his heat of 28.76 seconds, 0.8 seconds inside his seed time and finishing 17th overall.

In a test of physical and mental fitness, Jake also competed in two further events in the session, coming home in 2.26.77secs in the 200m Individual Medley and finishing fourth in his heat in the 100m freestyle in a sub-60 58.99 seconds.

The final day heralded a change in venue to the impressive New Surrey Sports Park and Louise McFadzen completed her regional campaign with the gruelling 800m freestyle, finishing in 10.00.62 seconds, 14th overall.

Next up are the ASA South Eastern Region BAGCAT Age Group Championships, which will be held in Crawley starting on 28th & 29th May, in which several of Newbury's younger swimmers will be competing, bidding to join Louise in Sheffield in July.

The Byron Bicentennial Swim 2010

On the 3rd May 1810, Lord Byron swam across the Hellespont in Turkey, the stretch of water that divides Europe from Asia. Exactly 200 years to the day SwimTrek organised a crossing to recreate this heroic swim. This crossing was the culmination of the Byron Swim Festival, a 3 day event held in Canakkale, Turkey where Byron enthusiasts, keen swimmers, academics and the current Lord Byron came together to celebrate what is widely seen as the dawn of open water swimming as a sport.

Don't worry if you have missed it as there is another opportunity to celebrate the bicentenary in August. For full details go to www.swimhellespont.com

You can read full reports of the swim in the Financial Times, Daily Mail and the Guardian.

The other interesting article is in the 'Outdoor swimming Societys' website by Colin Hill who won the event.
He was looking to beat the record of 48mins but in the end because it was so cold and rough he managed it in 1hr 27mins. Article

I had decided to also do the swim in the 13 degree water without a wetsuit because I mistakenly thought it would be too easy with one. I managed the 5km swim (although I swam a lot further than that due to not being able to see where I was going) in 1hr 52mins and came in at 35th place out of 140, only about 20 of us swam without a wetsuit!

It was a great atmosphere with everyone keyed up for the event, and I intend continue to do the swim every year but in August, when the swim is to celebrate the Turkish victory in their war of independance.
