Mike Galpin Masters - Byron Celebration SWim

Article By: Mike Galpin Edit Chris
Added On: 23/06/2010 13:44:45

THE BYRON BICENTENNIAL SWIM - MAY 3RD 2010

On the 3rd May 1810, Lord Byron swam across the Hellespont in Turkey, the stretch of water that divides Europe from Asia. Exactly 200 years to the day SwimTrek organised a crossing to recreate this heroic swim. This crossing was the culmination of the Byron Swim Festival, a 3 day event held in Canakkale, Turkey where Byron enthusiasts, keen swimmers, academics and the current Lord Byron came together to celebrate what is widely seen as the dawn of open water swimming as a sport.

Don't worry if you have missed it as there is another opportunity to celebrate the bicentenary in August. For full details go to www.swimhellespont.com

You can read full reports of the swim in the Financial Times, Daily Mail and the Guardian.

The other interesting article is in the 'Outdoor swimming Societys' website by Colin Hill who won the event.
He was looking to beat the record of 48mins but in the end because it was so cold and rough he managed it in 1hr 27mins. http://www.outdoorswimmingsociety.com/index.php?p=news&start=22

I had decided to also do the swim in the 13 degree water without a wetsuit because I mistakenly thought it would be too easy with one. I managed the 5km swim (although I swam a lot further than that due to not being able to see where I was going) in 1hr 52mins and came in at 35th place out of 140, only about 20 of us swam without a wetsuit!

It was a great atmosphere with everyone keyed up for the event, and I intend continue to do the swim every year but in August, when the swim is to celebrate the Turkish victory in their war of independance.

Paul's Solent swim

After two cancellations due to bad weather the Solent Swim was on for Sunday 27th September. We took RIB's to Hampstead ledge on the Isle of Wight and then swam to Lymington accross the Solent. In a straight line it was approximately 5k/3.2 miles but once I lost sight of the lead canoeist navgation was poor at best!

It was a beautiful day, conditions could not have been better with temperatures of 20c, blue skies and relatively calm waters as 45 of us ran into the water for the start. The swim was not technically a race but the first swimmers were out in 1:17 (they had both recently raced in Lake Geneva over 21 miles os this was a short race for them!)...I dragged myself across in 10th place in 1:38 and then enjoyed watching the sunset from the beach. A few hardy souls did make the attempt without wetsuits - about 3 made it and one ended up in hospital with hypothermia so it obvioulsy was not that warm without a wetsuit.

Will I be back next year for more? Right now I think not but ask me again at the beginning of the open water season!

Again a while since the last update and a lot has happened since I sent an update out.

Firstly the move to swimming at Hungerford has gone extremely well. We now have a warm(!) pool, four lanes and sunlight. The move has also helped encourage more swimmers and we now have a squad with more than 30 members and a regular Monday night squad of more around 20 swimmers. For those who have not yet made the trip out to Hungerford it is well worth while - swimming in the evening is so much more sociable than early mornings. If you are put off travelling from Thatcham etc then I live in East Thatcham and I only leave 10 mins earlier than when we swam at St Barts. If anyone would like a lift please let myself or Chris know.

Curry Night
Having a regular squad on Monday those pub goers of us have decided to start a more social get together. This Monday (20 July) we will be having a curry night at the local watering hole after swimming. Simple fare costing about £5 per person and for the sake of the chef we have been asked to all agree on chicken, beef or veg. If you are interested let Chris and myself know either in advance or before we start the session on Monday.

Summer Swimming
The larger squad has also enabled us to book the pool throughout the summer - so we will continue standard times Monday night at Hungerford. The usual format is that we also have 2 lanes at Northcroft on Thursday night (7:30pm-9:00pm) but this will be confirmed at the main swimming club committee meeting this Friday.

Competition Update
This past weekend was the club split medley - 50m sprints of each stroke. We had a good squad of Masters: Liz Pudney, Marcus van Heerden, Ross Jarvis, Dave Milburn, Chris Glover and myself with some excellent and surprising results. Well done to all for taking part (full results at http://www.ndsc.co.uk/admin/downloads/downloads/FullResults2009.pdf) and I hope it has spurred you all on to some competitions in the Autumn.

The next external Master competition we usually do is the Berks & South Bucks Open Masters Meet at Maidenhead. The date of this event is listed as 28 Nov 2009 but no entry details yet. I missed last year so I'm really looking forward to going this year and it would be good if we have enough people attending to enter a few relay teams.

Bournemouth Pier to Pier

As I am part of the Masters squad we have in the past entered the Bournemouth pier to pier swim.
Which entail swimming between Boscombe and Bournemouth piers an distance of around 1.4 miles.
This year was no different and two masters and one A squad member entered. Paul Broomfield an avid long distance swimmer, Chris Glover the Masters squad coach and Lily Glover.
The day was windy and over cast but this did not detract the 1000 competitors from entering the water which was 20 degrees a tad chilly and need less to say very choppy!!!
Wet suits and hat donned off we set to cover this distance in seas that were not forgiving and tossed and rolled you about!!!
Well the distance was covered by Paul in a time of 34 mins and a bit, Lily followed in 35 and myself a few seconds later!!
It was by no means an easy swim and I felt sea sick!!! Lily showed immense courage and strength to complete this!! And yes Paul you beat me!!!!

Paul also went onto to complete another long distance event on the 6th September swimming a distance of 4km off Brownsea Island. This he completed in a time 57:39 well done to him a great achievement.
Another swim he has also lined up is a swim from Lymington to the Isle of Wight but its all down to the tides and has been cancelled once already!!

2008-9 All Time Club Record Breakers

noimage.gif

Article By: Neville Glanville
Added On: 28/08/2009 18:57:02

A staggering 43 Club records were broken during the 2008-9 season, making one of the most successful seasons for quite some time.

Zara Ryan almost single handedly re-wrote the record books, setting 14 new records, and has already started on the 11 year-old category!

Other highlights were 10 year-old James McFadzen breaking two records that were almost as old as himself, the 100m breatstroke set in 1999 and 50m breast set in 2000.

Dave Milburn broke his own record he set 10 years ago in 100m breaststroke during the National League at end of last year (which also bettered his British Record, but cannot claim it as it was manually timed.

Congratulations to all record breakers. Full list is published on downloads page click here. This lists all record breakers, as some were broken more than once during the season. NOTE: these are Short Course records only.

A Social Trip to Basingstoke Aquadrome - Saturday 26th April 2008

Article By: George Walters (Challengers)
Added On: 04/05/2008 22:55:54

We met at Pelican Lane and boarded a Weaveaway coach bound for Basingstoke Aquadrome. I’d never been there before!! “A deprived child”!!! Teresa checked us all on to the coach.
40+ of the swimming club, All very excited we chatted amongst ourselves, oldies to back little ones to the front, munching our way through goodies until we arrived at the pool.

It’s one of the coolest places to have fun. There are 3 flumes; unfortunately the green space bowl was not working but we all enjoyed the “Master Blaster” where you sit on a rubber tube and scream as the flume takes you around the pool in a roller coaster effect. There was a 20metre pool for those club members who didn’t want a ride on one of the adrenalin pumping flumes.

Swimming in the rushing rapids knocked seconds off all our pb’s without any of the hard work. For those who needed to relax you could sit in the Spa Pool or take the more sedate ride on the Yellow Peril.

Sadly all good things come to an end and at 17.15 we were all out of the water for refreshments by the café. It was great fun we all had an opportunity to get to know each other and went home tired out.

A big thankyou to Teresa for all the organising and let’s hope there is another social event soon.

The final two rounds of the Club Championships will take place during December. However, Round 5 will be first because we had to change the date to 9th December as the original date clashed with the Plymouth Open Meet. This will be the 800m and 1500m freestyle.

Then on Thursday 13th December Round 4 featuring the 400m freestyle will take place.

These two events will then decide who gets the long distance trophies, and finalises some of the BAGCAT shield winners as well.

I expect you have all been wondering when the club records might be updated! Well, I have finally managed to find a little time to complete the task. This has involved recovering data from a number of sources, as you may recall that the previous system crashed and much of the data was lost.

Firstly I have updated the Club Championships records, and was astounded to discover that no fewer than 20 records were broken during the Club Championships at the end of 2006. Well done to all the record breakers. The full list will be published shortly on the downloads page.

I have also finally managed to complete the task of updating the All Time Club Records, and since the last list was produced in July 2005, an amazing total of 30 records have fallen since upto the end of last season (31 July 2006). Congratulations to all the new record holders.

I will endeavour to keep the system upto date more frequently. But be patient a little longer, Derek only got the data tonight, so will upload the data to web site soon.
